Sandwich

This article is about the food item. For other uses see: sandwich (disambiguation).

The sandwich is a food product consisting of two or more slices of bread enclosing one or more layers of meat or other fillings. The dish was named in the 18th century after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an English aristocrat, although it is unlikely to have been invented by him. It is said that Montagu was fond of this form of food because it allowed him to continue gambling whilst eating.

Sandwiches are common foods to be taken on picnics or for hiking.

In India, sandwiches are mostly vegetarian, the most common type being vegetable sandwich.

Some types of sandwich are too unwieldy to be held in the hand, thus defeating their original purpose.

A sponge sandwich is a sponge with a layer of filling. A biscuit sandwich likewise.
