Phytopathology
Phytopathology is the science of plant diseases. Phytopathology is more commonly known as Plant Pathology. Its subject matter includes all infectious agents that attack plants but does not include herbivory (the consumption of plants by animals).Common plant pathogens include species from these groups:
- Parasitic angiosperms -- such as genus Orobanche, which tap into the roots of other plants to obtain sustenance.
- Fungi -- various molds, rusts, and blights.
- Nematodes -- both as consumers and vectors.
- Algae -- such as genus Cephaleuros on citrus fruits.
- Oomycetes -- such as Phytophthora infestans, potato blight.
- Myxomycetes -- slime molds, directly or as vectors.
- Bacteria -- species from many genera such as Corynebacterium.
- Virus -- more than 700 are plant pathogens.
- Viroids -- small, single-stranded RNA pathogens causing a dozen plus diseases.
