Messina isthird largest citySicily, Italy andcapital ofprovince which bears its name. 260,000 people livethis city.

Founded by Greek colonists in8th century BC,was originally called Zancle (scythe) because ofshapeits natural harbour. Of that name therestill remained'Scalinata Zanclea' stairs. Messina was sacked396 BC byCarthaginians.

The city was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquakeassociated tsunami onmorningDecember 28, 1908, killing over 75,000. In June 1955, Messina waslocation ofconferencewestern European foreign ministers which led tocreation ofEuropean Economic Community.
