A MemberParliament, also known as an MP isrepresentative elected byvotersan electoral district toparliament; inWestminster system, specifically tolower house, or HouseCommons.

The British Parliamentdivided intoHouseCommons andHouseLordsitoften assumed that an MP ismemberCommons, butcan bemembereither house. Nonetheless,letters "MP"appended aspost-nominalan individual's name only if that person ismember ofHouseCommons. There659 members ofHouseCommons.

MPs inHouseCommonselected forperiodfive years or until Parliamentdissolved. The members ofHouseLordsappointed byQueen or King, butselectiondone byBritish Prime Minister.

Thereseveral special membersParliament, includingPrime Minister, other government ministers,Chief Whipeach party, Privy Counsellors, andSpeaker ofHouse.

MembersParliamenttechnically forbiddenresign their seats. However, appointment to"paid office underCrown" disqualifies an MP from sitting inCommons,two nominally paid offices -Chiltern Hundreds andManorNorthstead - existallow membersresign fromHouse.
