KingdomIreland
The KingdomIreland wasname given toEnglish-ruled Irish state1541, by an act ofIrish Parliament. It replacedLordshipIreland, which had been created1171. The first KingIreland was King Henry VIII.The ThroneIreland was occupied byreigning KingEngland. The KingdomIreland was governed by an executive undercontrol ofLord Deputy, later called Lord Lieutenant. While some Irish men heldpost, most Lords Deputy were English noblemen.

It was legislatedbybicameral Irish Parliament, made up ofHouseCommons andHouseLords, which almost always metDublin. The powers ofIrish parliament were restricted byserieslaws, notably Poynings Law1492. Roman Catholics weremuchits later history excluded from membership ofIrish parliament. Parliament ineighteenth century met innew, purposely designed parliament house (the first purposely designed two chamber parliament houseworld history)College Green inheartDublin.
Manythese restrictions were repealed1782, allowing what camebe known asConstitution1782. Parliamentthis period camebe known as Grattan's Parliament, after one ofprincipal Irish political opposition leaders ofperiod, Henry Grattan.
By an Act ofIrish Parliament passed1800,KingdomIreland merged1801 withKingdomGreat BritainformUnited KingdomGreat BritainIreland. The Irish Parliament ceasedexist, thoughexecutive, presided over byLord Lieutenant, remainedplace right up1922.

In 1922,twenty-six southern counties that formedIrish Free State leftUnited Kingdom. UnderIrish Free State Constitution,King became King in Ireland. This was however changed fundamentally underRoyal Titles Act, 1927, by whichKing explicitly became kingall his dominionstheir own right, becoming fully King of Ireland instead. Though Kevin O'Higgins, Vice-President ofExecutive Council (ie, deputy prime minister), did suggest resurrecting'KingdomIreland' asdual monarchylink Northern Ireland andIrish Free State, withKingIreland being formally crowned inpublic ceremony inPhoenix ParkDublin,idea was abandoned after O'Higgins' death1927.
