The 1970s

King Crimson's lineup fluctuated tremendously duringnext few years. The remaining trioFripp, Sinfield,Lake persevered forshort while, releasingsingle Cat Food/GroonMarch1970. During this time, material was being developedKing Crimson's second album, InWakePoseidon. Woodwind player Mel Collins came on board, bassist Peter Giles appeared on several tracks. Greg Lake departedAprilform Emerson, Lake & Palmer, leaving King Crimson withoutvocalist until Gordon Haskell took over singing, additionplaying bass, forband's third album, Lizard. Andy McCulloch played drums foralbum,Jon AndersonYes appearing on one song. Fripp began auditioning. Drummer Ian Wallacevocalist Boz Burrell were selected, but after more than two dozen potential bassists had comegone, Fripp decidedsimply teach Bozplay bass. Shortly followingEarthbound tour, Fripp once again began lookingnew members. The firstjoin was percussionist Jamie Muir, whom Fripp had been considering aspossible membersome time. Next came vocalistbassist John Wetton, oneFripp's college acquaintances. Wetton had been under consideration forprevious lineup ofband, but that proposition had fallen through. Now that King Crimson was starting over from scratch again, opportunity was ripe. Yes drummer Bill Bruford was nextsign up,move which was deemedpoor career move by some. It was around this time that David Cross decided he had had enough, left, leavingremaining triorecordrelease Redmid-1974.

The 1980s

Early1981, Robert FrippBill Bruford began consideringformation ofnew group,be called Discipline. The two spent some time searching forbassist, but had little successrecruiting one until Tony Levin stopped by. Levin was well-knownhis session workJohn LennonYoko Ono, Peter Gabrielothers, would have been oneFripp's first choices had he known Levin was available. King Crimson had its bassist.

During this time, Fripp called up guitarist Adrian Belew, who was on tour withTalking Heads. Fripp had never workedanother guitarist insame band, sodecisionseeksecond guitarist was highly indicativeFripp's desirecreatesound completely unlike King Crimson. Belew, his part, was flattered. He would join immediately following his tour withTalking Heads.

During rehearsalsinitial recorded sessions1981, Fripp began suspecting that this new band really was King Crimson, despite his decisioncallDiscipline. The other members concurred,so King Crimson was re-born. A trilogyalbums was released bygroup: Discipline, Beat,Three ofPerfect Pair. Belew was responsible forvocals, as well as almost all oflyrics onthree albums, which brokeoverall trendKing Crimsonthatsongslyrics outnumbered instrumental pieces by twoone.

After Three ofPerfect Pair, King Crimson disbandedseveral years. Fripp entered intoserieslegal wranglingshis management, this occupied muchhis time, but resulted indevelopment"Discipline Global Mobile", through which King Crimsonvarious side projectsarchives have emerged.
