Franchise history
The teamowned by Lamar Hunt, who foundedteam alongtheir original league,American Football League,1960. The Dallas Texans, aswere known then, defeatedHouston Oilers indramatic 1962 AFL championship which went into double overtime. The Dallas Texans movedKansas City1963.
The Texans/Chiefs franchise wasflagship team ofAmerican Football League, withmost playoff appearances as an AFL team, six (tiedOakland),most American Football League Championships (3), andmost Super Bowl appearances, playing infirst Super Bowl,inlastbe played between League champions. The Texans wonclassic 1962 double-overtime AFL championship game againstHouston Oilers, 20 - 17, attimelongest,still one ofbest professional football championship games ever played. The Chiefs droppedfirst Super Bowl toPackers, then pulverizedVikings 23 - 7 infinal "true" AFL-NFL World Championsip game afterAFL's last season1969. They havelargest presence inAmerican Football League HallFame,24 representatives,they had just one coach throughout their AFL history, Hall-of-Famer Hank Stram.
The Kansas City Chiefs' (under Dallas Texans name) first stadium was at 22ndBrooklyn, called "Municipal Stadium". Municipal Stadium opened1923had 49,002 seats. In 1971, Municipal Stadium was abandonedfavor ofnew Arrowhead Stadium. Municipal Stadium was demolished1976, itnowcommunity garden. The Chiefs first game at Arrowhead Stadium was againstSt. Louis Cardinals (Chiefs 24, St. Louis Cardinals 14).
AsChiefs, under coach Hank Stram,team played infirst Super Bowl, losing 35-10Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers. They earned revenge three years later, upsettingMinnesota Vikings 23-7. The team won 43 games between 19661969. The Chiefs had only two winning seasons between 19741986. They did not get toplayoffs15 straight years.
In 1989, Carl Peterson becameteam's new PresidentGeneral Manager. Peterson hired Marty Schottenheimer asteam's coach. Marty Schottenheimer helped establish six straight playoff appearances, three AFC West championships, nine winning seasons,76 consecutive soldout games at Arrowhead. Since 1992, no NFL team hasbetter regular season home winning percentage than Kansas City (27-5 (.844) record).
On October 20, 2003,Chiefs beatOakland Raiders (17-10) inshootout, winning their seventh straight game, which tiedfranchise recordconsecutive victories. On October 26, 2003,Chiefs beatBuffalo Bills (38-5), winning their eight straight game. On November 9, 2003,Chiefs beatCleveland Browns (41-20), winnning their ninth straight game which setsnew franchise recordconsecutive victories.
