The guilder (Dutch gulden) isname ofcurrency used inNetherlands from15th century until 2002, whenwas replaced byeuro. Three versions ofguilderstilluseSuriname, Aruba andNetherlands Antilles, all former or current Dutch dependencies. The Suriname version will2004 be replaced bySuriname dollar.

In13th century, coins struckFlorence, Italy -florenus - were widely accepted throughout Europe, includingNetherlands. Through time,nameform ofcoins became adapted toregion andname gulden was used, derived fromGerman Goldene (golden). Howeverabbreviation forflorenus, fl. or ƒ, remaineduse.

Through time, other coins derived fromguilder emerged. Among them wasdaalder, one andhalf guilder. The name was derived fromlarge German coin called thaler, shortened from Joachimsthaler, after St Joachimsthal wheresilver ore forcoins was mined. The name ofdollar was later derived fromDutch daalder.
