Certain small towns have celebrated meteorological groundhogs, such as Punxsutawney PhilWiarton Willie.

The first Groundhog Day was observedPunxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1887.

The U.S. tradition derived fromScottish couplet:

If Candlemas Daybrightclear,
there'll be two winters inyear.
