The sport was particularly attractivepredominantly male working-class audiences,whomurban locations oftracks andevening times ofmeetings were accessible, andpatronsowners from various social backgrounds. Betting has always beenkey ingredientgreyhound racing, both through on-course bookmakers andtotalizator, first introduced1930. In commonmany other sports, greyhound racing enjoyed its highest attendances just afterSecond World War -example, there were 34 million paying spectators1946. The sport experienceddecline fromearly 1960s, when1960 BettingGaming Act permitted off-course cash betting, although sponsorship, limited television coverage andlater abolitionon-course betting tax have partially offset this decline.
