A gremlin isfictional mischievous creature. Gremlinsdepicted as highly mechanically orientedextremely devious.

The concept ofGremlins as responsiblesabotaging aircraftsaidhave originated intale told among men ofRoyal Air Force ofUnited Kingdom serving inMiddle East during World War II. The story attemptedexplainaccidents which often occurred during their flights.

The lore ofgremlin was reportedly toldRoald Dahl by colleagueshis in80th squadron ofRoyal Air Force during his own service inMiddle East. Dahl had his own experiencean accidental crash-landing inLibyan Desert. He was believedhave recoveredbriefly resumed servingGreeceSyria but his frequent headaches soon caused himbe relievedactive duty. In January, 1942 he was transferredWashington, DC as Assistant Air Attache. There he eventually authored his novel "The Gremlins". He showedfinished manuscriptSidney Bernstein,head ofBritish Information Service. Sidney reportedly came up withideasend itWalt Disney.

The manuscript arrivedDisney's handsJuly, 1942he considered usingas material forfilm. The film project never materialised but Disney managedhavestory published inDecember, 1942 issueCosmopolitan Magazine. About halfyear laterrevised version ofstory was published inpicture book published by Random House. Thanks mainlyDisney,story had its sharepublishity which helpedintroducingconcept towider audience. Issues #33-#41Walt Disney's ComicsStories published between June, 1943February, 1944 containednine-episode seriesshort silent stories featuringGremlin Gus as their star. The first was drawn by Vivie Risto andrestthem by Walt Kelly. This served as their introduction tocomic book audience.

It was at this point Robert Clampett created his 1943 Bugs Bunny film, "Falling Hare". With Disney's film never materialising this short hadsignificancebeingfirstintroduceconcept ofGremlincinema audiences.

Bugsfeatured as relaxing at an air field, readingbook "Victory Through Hare Power," while no one else seemsbe there. Bugsamused when his book mentionscreatureWorld War II folklore,Gremlin as responsible"diabolical sabotage"aircrafts, spreading havoc. But then Bugs hears noises indicating activitie atnear-by bomber plane. When he investigates, he discoversGremlin working at sabotagingairplane. Before he knowsBugs ends up pilotingplane whileGremlin continues his work at destroying it.

In 1984movie called Gremlins directed by Joe Dante was produced, followed bysequel Gremlins 2 - The New Batch1990.
