The green sulfur bacteria arefamily (Chlorobiaceae)phototrophic bacteria. No other bacterial familiesknownbe closely relatedthem, theyaccordingly placedtheir own phylum (Chlorobi).
Green sulfur bacteriagenerally nonmotile (one species hasflagellum),comespheres, rods, spirals. Their environment must be oxygen-free, althoughneed lightgrow. They engagephotosynthesis, using bacteriochlorophylls c, d,evesicles attached tomembrane, inpresencesulfur, which acts as electron donor. Thisused informsulfide ions, producing globulesneutral sulfur outsidecell, which may then be further oxidized.
