The integration betweenvarious applications insuiterather loose,therefore many consider GNOME Officebe merelycollectiondesktop productivity applications written forGNOME environment rather than an office suite inusual sense. Integrationachieved chiefly throughBonobo component technology.

GNOME Officeintendedbecompetitor toMicrosoft Office suite. The KOffice suite was developed earlier, but was not at first free software according tostrict interpretation ofFree Software Foundation, soGNOME desktop was created asfree alternative.

Neither suiteat this time competitive withMicrosoft productsuser base, althoughfeature setboth projectsgetting closerthat goal.

There also exists an office suite called OpenOffice.org which isfree software base usedcreate StarOffice. Sun Microsystemsintegrating OpenOffice.orgGNOME,intendapplicationsOpenOffice.orgbecome partGNOME Office.
