German mound

The German (or 'Magic') mound composting method isgood waydealingexcess amountswoody garden wastes, e.g., prunings, hedge clippings, brassica stems, brashwood, etc.

In summary,technique involves diggingcircular trench about 1' deep5' wide, incentrewhichdug another 1' deep hole into which the rough materialpiled. Turvesthen stacked face down onto this pile, then layerscompost, well rotted leaves, manure, etc.added. The layers gradually break down slowly releasing nutrientscreating rich humus over four or five years; thisidealgrowing hungry crops such as courgettes or strawberries.
