Georges Méliès (December 8,1861-January 21,1938, full name: Maries-Georges-Jean Méliès) wasFrench filmmaker whofamousleading many technicalnarrative developments inearliest cinema.BornParis, France where he later died.

He was very innovative inuse"special effects". He accidentally discoveredstop trick, or substitution,1896,was one offirst filmmakersuse multiple exposures, dissolves,colorhis films.

Before making films, he wasmagician atTheatre Robert-Houdin. In 1895, he became interestedfilm after seeingdemonstration ofLumière Brothers' camera. He directed 531 films, between 1896-1914. In subject matter, these filmsoften similar tomagic theater shows that Méliès had been doing, containing "tricks"impossible events, such as objects disappearing or changing size.

His most famous film"A Trip toMoon" (Le Voyage dans la Lune) from 1902; also famous"The Impossible Voyage" (Le VoyageTravers l'Impossible) from 1904. Boththese filmsabout strange voyages, somewhat instyleJules Verne. Theseconsideredbe some ofmost important early science fiction films, although their approachcloserfantasy.
