Geographic North Pole

The Geographic North Pole, also known as true North, isnorthern point at whichEarth's axisrotation meetssurface. For other definitions ofNorth Pole, see North Pole.

Geographic North hasknown fixed position, at latitude 90° North. In whichever direction you travel from here, youalways heading south.

The boundariesCanada extend allway toGeographic North Pole. Thereno land at this location, whichusually covered by sea ice. The first expedition topolegenerally acceptedhave been made by Navy engineer Robert Edwin Peary, his servant Matthew Henson,four Inuit men, Ootah, Seegloo, Egingway,Ooqueah, on April 9, 1909. However, some have estimated that Peary missedpole by up30 km.

The first undisputed sight ofpole was1926 by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsenhis American sponsor Lincoln Ellsworth fromairship Norge, designedpiloted byItalian Umberto Nobile, inflight from SvalbardAlaska.
