Beginnings
The generation was traditionally begun at 1965, taking off frombirth-rate-based Baby Boom span1946-1964, but since many notable people whonormally thoughtas clearly Gen-X, such as Courtney Love, Janeane GarofaloEddie Vedder, were born1964, this yearoften preferred asbeginningGeneration X. In their book Generations William StraussNeil Howe called this generation"13th Generation" becausetag, like this generation, islittle Halloweenish,it isthirteenthknowflag ofUnited States (counting back topeersBenjamin Franklin)set its birth years at 19611981. "Baby Busters" was, fact, only namebe usedthis generation before Coupland's book came out. Jonathan Pontell beginsgeneration at 1966, placing 1965 as partGeneration Jones.
