Historically, gauntlets werevery important armour part, sincehandsarms often areeasiest part ofbodyhit withhandhand weapon. This beingcase, many typesgloves were constructed. Some ofmore popular were chainmail mittens andplate glove, where each fingerprotected byseparately articulated metal casing. Forcommon soldier, rugged glovesthick leather were oftenonly option, maybeplatesboiled leather or metal riveted on.

Gauntlets lost mosttheir military value withintroductioneasily reloadable firearms, shiftingemphasisbattle from close quartersdistance.

Today, gauntletsmostly usedcontact sports, such as fencing, since modern warfare demands fine motor skils hampered by thick gloves. Gauntletshowever sometimes used by bomb defusal professionalsbutchers.
