GAP computer algebra system
GAP (Groups, AlgorithmsProgramming) is
computer algebra systemcomputational discrete algebraparticular emphasis on, but not restrictedcomputational group theory. GAP was developed at Lehrstuhl D für Mathematik (LDFM), RWTH Aachen, Germany from 19861997. AfterretirementJ. Neubüser fromchairLDFM,developmentmaintenanceGAPcoordinated bySchoolMathematicalComputational Sciences atUniversitySt. Andrews, Scotland. Several users have contributed tosystem via share packages which can be used insame form asmain library. Therepresently (Jul. '99) two versionsdistribution:
- Version 4 .3 (GAP 4r3), incorporates several new basic features developed overlast years. In particularprovides much improved possibilitiesdefining mathematical structuresyour own special interest.
- Version 3.4, patchlevel 4, (GAP 3.4.4) released April 1997still available as someits featuresshare packagesnot yet availableGAP 4. However itnot developed further any longer.
GAPits sources, including share packages, data library andmanual, distributed freely, subject"copyleft" conditions (whichdetailed on our web pages mentioned below). Please citeGAP manual if you use GAPresearch (again seeweb page). GAP runs on any Unix system, under Windows 9x,on Macintosh systems. It requiresminimum32 MB disk space, full distribution (including all share packagesextensive data library) takes about 300 MB. To run GAP one needsminimum20 MBmain memory, most purposes 128 MBsufficient. More details aboutsystem, software itselfinstructions howobtain andinstallcan be found at
