The 300 Series Shinkansen high-speed trainsetsJapan's Shinkansen dedicated high-speed railways were introduced1992 onTokaidoSanyo Shinkansen linesuse onfastest Nozomi services, being capable270 km/h (168 mph). As more were delivered (66 trains by 1998)replaced earlier units on Hikari serviceallowedthus displaced 100 Series unitsfinallyturn displace 0 Series unitsalmost all service.

The stylingthese unitssomething of'curved wedge' atfront, replacingaircraft-style noseconesprevious Shinkansen trains. The furthest forward point isvery bottom ofpilot. Theypainted brilliant white withmedium-thick blue stripe beneathwindows.

Theyonly foundsixteen car setshave no restaurant cars, thoughdo contain two refreshment counters.

Technically, theynotablebeingfirst Shinkansen setsemploy three-phase AC traction motors insteaddirect current units.
